Press Start - New Boon(e) Gallery

New Boon(e) presents Press Start, a group show curated by New Boon(e) member Maureen O’Dwyer.

First Friday Opening : May 6th 7-10pm
Performance : May 7th doors open 7:30pm

"Throughout history, art has depicted the observable, natural, scientific world, as well as the ecstatic mysteries of religion, mythology, and folklore.  These two seemingly disparate means of experiencing reality have often been at odds, especially as the slow forward march of scientific progress threatens the structures of power built by religious institutions. One such intellectual and ideological struggle centers around our very beginnings: the birth of the universe, abiogenesis, and evolutionary biology versus religious narratives of creation."

The artists featured in Press Start work in a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and sound, and they individually approach their understandings of the origins of life and the universe by religious, spiritual, and/or scientific means. Press Start seeks to explore whether or not these contemporary artists reconcile these scientific theories and creation narratives, and contextualizes the artwork for the broader understanding of the audience. The work varies between the personal and the impersonal, the certain and the uncertain, and may not provide answers so much as it will raise more questions.

A wise man would probably say something like “Life’s a journey, dumbass.” And he’s right. We each have an immeasurable capacity for intake (and output, but we’ll get to that part later). With five senses and a personality to go with it individualism is born. Solely, we observe and calculate and react… and at some point, near the advent of adulthood, have the realization that this world is what we make of it and that this “journey” is what defines everything that is unique.       And you can’t plan it, this journey, like it’s your next vacation or a grocery list.

You must treat time like a grand pilgrimage. Not unlike Pilgrims, artists are persons in motion – passing trough territories not their ownAllow everything to quantify and cultivate you. Then make art about it. Create. Express.

It is in celebration of this sentiment that Hancock Garage invites you to gather, in this season of thanks, and toast to the human elements that both unite and individualize us.
